Sono cresciuto con l'idea di essere uno zigano. Volendo uscire da quest'idea, mi pensai Rumeno (...) Ho riscoperto la mia identità (...). Voglio morire come una Persona Umana.
Essere Rumeno non significava più essere un cittadino dello stato di Romania, integratosi e che si sente legato ad essa. Piuttosto, significava d'improvviso confrontarsi in termine di sangue, eredi ed antenati. Ho avuto momenti difficili nel dichiarare che i miei predecessori erano Daci o Romeni. Sapevo che non era vero e ci mi rendeva differente dagli altri Rumeni. I miei predecessori erano zingari. Crebbi arrabbiato e inizia a chiedermi: "Chi sono veramente?"
La politica romanì deve trattare dei diritti umani generali, deve collegarsi ai valori comuni e ai codici morali, e non focalizzarsi esclusivamente sull'etnia o sui problemi nazionali. Perciò preferisco una linea di condotta che non passi per gli standard dei diritti umani internazionali o attraverso le loro istituzioni ed organizzazioni.
C'è una riluttanza dei governi nel condannare pubblicamente, in maniera chiara e inequivocabile, la violenza aperta e l'espressa ostilità che portano alla violenza contro le persone e la popolazione rom nel suo complesso.
Direi che come si trattano le persone rom nella vita di tutti i giorni, può servire come una specie di "barometro" per misurare lo stato della democrazia e la sua transizione alla democrazia in una varietà di paesi. Ugualmente. l'atteggiamento pubblico verso le questioni rom, serve come banco di prova della tenuta delle istituzioni democratiche, del ruolo della legge e per il consolidamento dei movimenti civili e delle associazioni. Questo è proprio il caso delle democrazie recentemente emerse nell'Europa Centrale e Orientale, dove vive la maggior parte della popolazione rom miondiale.
Siamo un popolo senza un territorio o uno stato proprio. Una delle conseguenze di questo fatto è che la nostra identità culturale e il nostro status di minoranza etnica sono stati difficilmente riconosciuti nella vita pubblica.
Non avendo controllo di confini o pretese territoriali, le questioni rom non sono percepite dalle politiche nazionali e internazionali come crescita delle "questioni della sicurezza", e quindi non viene data loro molta attenzione nelle negoziazioni bilaterali e/o multi/intergovernative riguardo la situazione delle minoranze. Non essendo riconosciuti come un popolo, e infine come minoranza nazionale, talvolta la vera "condizione umana" era e viene tuttora frequentemente negata a individui e comunità rom, come nel caso di tutto il pensiero e la pratica razzista.
Il pensiero e l'agire politico di individui, comunità e associazioni rom sembra dirigersi verso la "Soluzione della Dimensione Umana" dei loro problemi e le loro relazioni con le persone circostanti e le comunità locali che vivono accanto a loro, nel senso che la Dimensione Umana nell'OSCE deve comprendersi come componente interconnesso della costruzione della democrazia e delle misure di sicurezza in Europa. Questa "soluzione" ci sfida a ripensare le pratiche, attuali e durature, di amministrazione dei diritti civici ed umani, in collegamento diretto con unità e identità territoriali chiare, omogenee, identità infine "purificate" (locali, etniche, ecc.)

L'Olocausto ancora non è stato riconosciuto come fatto politico.
La povertà del nostro popolo, la capisco sino ad un certo punto, non oltre: non siamo a chiedere l'elemosina agli altri. La nostra miseria da forza ai nuovi nazisti, dobbiamo averne conoscenza per combatterli.
La nostra terra, il ROMESTAN, ci è stato copiata ed è diventato patrimonio dei discorsi della destra. Ricordatevi: in Germania la prima misura dei nazisti fu di togliere la cittadinanza ai sinti, e la loro prima richiesta a guerra finita fu di riaverla. Allora: la cittadinanza EU, richiesta da molti, non può essere una riparazione per la mancata cittadinanza nazionale.
Siamo una nazione culturale: IL NOSTRO SIMBOLO NON E' LO STERMINIO, MA LA SOPRAVVIVENZA.

În numele familiei Domnului Nicolae Gheorghe și a celor care i-au fost aproape, cu mare regret și durere profundă, confirm vestea decesul omului Nicolae Gheorghe.
Corpul neînsuflețit va fi depus în capela bisericii Șerban Vodă (str. Petre Țuțea – vezi hartă mai jos) începând de azi, orele 12.00.
Duminică, orele 13.00, la biserica mai sus amintită ne vom lua la revedere de la cel care a fost neprețuit pentru mulți dintre noi, de la care și în ultimele zile de viața ne vorbea despre poporul rom.
Dumnezeu sa-l odihnească.

The European Roma and Travellers Forum has learnt with shock and dismay of the untimely death of one of our greatest Roma leaders Nicolae Gheorghe, on 8 August 2013.
Nicolae Gheorge was a dear friend and collaborator whit whom we worked for many years.
He selflessly worked for the Roma till the very last moment and shared with us his vast knowledge and extensive political experience.
His passing away is a signiﬁcant loss not only to his country Romania but to the whole Roma nation in Europe, particularly given his moral stature, his vision and his leadership.
All ERTF members express their sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Nicolae Gheorghe.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Yesterday, the Roma nation lost a dedicated Human Rights Fighter, a Diplomat, a Mediator and above all a great Human Being!
All of our friends that I have spoken to have their own treasured memories of Nicolae Gheorghe, and I know how much they valued their friendship.
He brought happiness to everyone that knew him, and he will be sadly missed.
For me, it was a great pleasure and a privilege to know him, to work with him and to learn from him.
In my life, I have been the student of two Roma teachers and true leaders.

I was very shocked and sad when I hear about the death of Dr. Nicolae Gheorghe just a day after I saw his name in one of the Roma net works.
It is hard to add more after your thoughts abut Dr. Nikolae Gheorghe death, especially Thomas’ detailed account about him. I am really glad that I could meet him in the early 90s when Thomas organized a very important symposium at Greenwhich University on Roma Politics and Culture.
Having so many famous Roma activist and academics attending, I felt rather scared to give my talk. I remember well, that Dr. Gheorghe was sitting front of me, and his kind personality and interest gave me such a great support, that I forget all my anxiety in no time. After that I looked out to read his very thorough, intelligent yet never aggressive papers, that was to create understanding between the Roma and non-Roma population of his country and beyond.
After loosing two colleagues in Hungarian ethnomusicology in the last few months, I feel very sad to loose yet another excellent person in Romany studies.
I feel very honoured that I had the luck to have met him. My thoughts are with his family and people who lost a deeply human person.
Rest in Peace, Nicolae, and God be with you.

C'est avec tristesse que nous avons appris le décès de Nicolae Gheorghe. Nous souhaitons lui rendre hommage. Il était l'un de ceux qui ont fondé l'organisation tsigane mondiale. Nous nous souvenons que de tels hommes ont eu à combattre dans les pires difficultés, et tout d'abord pour voyager librement. Et quand il pouvait participer aux congrès, c'était souvent sans argent pour la nourriture et l'hébergement. Les plus jeunes doivent pouvoir s'imaginer cela, s'en souvenir et mesurer le chemin parcouru.
Même si parfois nous avons eu des désaccords, il demeure notre frère pour toujours.

With sadness, our organisation learned Nicolae Gheorghe passing. We wish to pay a tribute to him. He was one of those who founded the world romany organisation. We remember that such men had to fight in the worst difficulties, first to travel freely. And when he could attend the congresses, it was often with the lack of money for accomodation. The youngers must be able to imagine it, to remember it and to measure progress.

Dear friends - I was truly sorry to hear of Nicolae's death - I had heard of his being 'not well' a while ago. I first met Nicolae in 1998 during a Roma-Police seminar we organised in Peterborough, UK. He swept into the seminar room in a wide brimmed stetson hat - his personality and personal power were striking. I got to know him better, as a human being and not just a 'Roma leader' when my car ran out of petrol as I was driving him back to London from the seminar. It was a cold, rainy, grim Sunday, and I had been running guests back and forth to the train station all day. He said I had been mother to everyone but not to myself, pushed the car out of the middle of the road - and we sat for over an hour discussing our politics, our history and 'where we were coming from', unconcerned about how we could sort out our problem. I realised that Nicolae was not only an intellectual but also an enlightened and kindly man - the Roma cause has lost a great champion.
